2016 CHINESE NEW YEAR CALLIGRAPHY CHARITY SALE

Kuala Lumpur, 7 April 2016 – For the seventh consecutive year, Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) and Parkson Corporation Sdn Bhd assisted five independent schools in the Klang Valley, namely Kuen Cheng High School, Confucian Private Secondary School, Tsun Jin High School, Chong Hwa Independent High School (KL) and Kwang Hua Private High School to organize Chinese New Year (CNY) Calligraphy Charity Sale in aid of needy students in these schools.

The Charity Sale was held at 9 participating Parkson stores namely Pavilion KL, Suria KLCC, KL Festival City Mall, OUG Shopping Centre, IOI City Mall Putrajaya, NU Sentral, Sunway Pyramid, 1 Utama Shopping Centre and Klang Parade. The students from the 5 schools had staged Calligraphy demonstrations and Chinese orchestra performances at these Parkson stores over 3 weekends in January 2016 prior to the Lunar New Year celebration, and successfully raised RM235,328.55. This brings the total amount raised from the Calligraphy Charity Sale since its inception in 2010, to RM1,691,975.45 to assist the needy students in the participating independent schools.

The expenses for the Calligraphy sale and performances were sponsored by Lion-Parkson Foundation and Parkson Corporation while the special paper for writing the Calligraphy pieces were provided by Xian’s Calligraphy Centre founded by LPF Chariman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng. Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng and Lion Group Director cum LPF Trustee, Mr CS Tang presented the cheques for the sales proceeds to the 5 schools today.

Lion-Parkson Tsinghua Calligraphy Competition 2016

LPF together with Beijing Tsinghua University and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) had organized Lion-Parkson Tsinghua Calligraphy Competition 2016 at UTAR campus in Bandar Sungai Long on 10 January 2016. Out of the 115 participants in the 2 categories namely University/College Students, and Public; 54 finalists were selected in the judging held at Xian’s Place in Kuala Lumpur by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng; Professor Lim Chooi Kwa from UTAR, and calligraphers, Mr Chang Moke Wah, Mr Kerk Won Hoo and Mr HK Chia on 22 January 2016 and their calligraphy pieces were sent to Tsinghua University in Beijing for the final selection.

The final selection of the winning pieces was carried out in the Calligraphy, Cultural and Learning Centre in Tsinghua University on 9th March 2016. The judging was done by 4 famous calligraphers and scholars in China, namely Professor Liu Tao from China Central Academy of Arts; Professor Liu Shi from School of Humanities, Tsinghua University; Professor Du Peng Fei, Deputy Executive Director of Arts Museum, Tsinghua University; and Dr Luo San Gui, China Guang Ming Daily Deputy Director of Photography and Art Department, Senior Editor and Calligrapher. Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng, Chairman of Lion-Parkson Foundation was present to witness the judging and selection of winners.

Altogether, there are 10 winners from the Public category and 11 winners from the University Students category. The judges in recognising and praising the overall high standard of calligraphy in Malaysia, decided with the organizers’ agreement to award one additional Merit prize in the University Students category in view of the comparable skills of the participants.

The top 5 winners from each category will be invited to attend a 4-day calligraphy workshop and awards presentation ceremony at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China from 13 – 16 April 2016. LPF will pay for all the expenses namely airfare, visa, accommodation and meals for the top 5 student category winners, while the top 5 winners in the Public category will pay for their airfare, visa and accommodation, with meals provided by the Foundation. These top 5 winners and another 5 Merit winners in the Public category will also receive cash prizes.
